On the 18th of November 2015 Eduard Rodés, the Director of the Escola Europea de Short Sea Shipping (2E3S), awarded the Certificate of Compliance Arete to the Excelsior vessel of the shipping line Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV), which operates the route Tangier-Barcelona-Genoa. The certificate has been handed over to Commandant Mendoza and to Matteo De Candia, GNV’s representative in Barcelona, and subsequently hung in the command bridge. This certificate attests that the vessel is in compliance with the quality requirements set by 2E3S to host the MOST (Motorways of the Sea Training) course.
Following the award ceremony Rodés, Mendoza and De Candia were joined by the head commissioner and the first and second officers of the vessel, and enjoyed a cocktail prepared by the crew. The future relationship between 2E3S and GNV was at the heart of the discussions: both parties hope that the courses will play an important role in the Grandi Navi Veloci routes in the coming years. GNV is one of the 5 founding partners of 2E3S.
The 2E3S award comes from the Greek word for “excellence” (Ἀρετή). In ancient greece it formed a significant part of education of the people (Paideia). It included physical training, for which the gymnasion were created, and mental training, which prepared in oratory skills, the rhetoric, basic sciences and spiritual training. These all serve as an inspiration for 2E3S, and the vessels in which the courses take place need to be able to accomodate such (albeit contemporary) training.
Other recipients of this award include the Cruises Roma and Barcelona of Grimaldi Lines.
