IATA, the International Air Transport Association, together with the Barcelona-Catalonia Logistics Centre (BCL) and the Barcelona El Prat airport have started the certification process of logistics excellence – IATA CEIV Pharma. 5 logistics companies and 2 freight forwarders will be certified for the handling of medicines for human use in the field of air freight.
The project Center of Excellence for Independent Validators on Pharmaceutical Handling IATA (CEIV Pharma) aims to validate the companies that comprise the supply chain, the internationally accredited for handling, management and delivery of medicines for human use according to global standards for pharmaceutical distribution.
This initiative has the support of relevant Catalan pharmaceutical companies, interested in having agents internationally certified to transport drugs to ensure compliance with stringent European standards and the most advanced countries, which stipulate strict temperature controls, packaging, etc.
Catalonia accounts for 48% of Spanish pharmaceutical exports by air and pharmacy and chemical products account for 14% of air cargo at the Barcelona El Prat Airport according to the Spanish Customs. It is an eminently exporting and high value-added sector, with a high percentage of goods going towards third countries.
International hub for the transport of medicines
BCL and AENA, the sponsors of the CEIV Pharma project in Barcelona, considered having certified companies that cover the entire logistics chain very important in order to achieve the positioning of the airport and the community as a logistics hub for international transportation of medicines.
Companies with certified centers in Barcelona include 2 large airport handling agents (Swissport and WFS) and 3 forwarding agents (Airpharm Logistics, DB Schenker and Ibercondor). This ensures full coverage of shipping pharmaceuticals throughout the airport. Barcelona will be the Spanish airport with the largest number of certified companies, reflecting the importance of the Catalan sector.
