From the 13th to the 15th of November, 39 French students and 3 accompanying teachers have participated in the MOST (Motorways of the Sea Training) Operations course organized by the Escola Europea de Short Sea Shipping (2E3S) of Barcelona, a training in intermodal logistics, the motorways of the sea and the environmental policies on transport of the European Union. The students, who currently study transport logistics and international business at the French institutions Lycée Jules Guesde and the Lycée Mendes France from Montpellier, had the opportunity to broaden their knowledge.
Last Friday, the French students met in Barcelona and embarked on the course-workshop on board of a Grandi Navi Veloci Ro-Pax vessel, on the crossing between Barcelona and Genoa. Over three days, 2E3S introduced intermodal logistics, explained the integration of the motorways of the sea in intermodal logistics chains, presented the importance of energy efficiency in the European transport sector and analysed the comparative costs between different means of transport, in a format that combined class-room style lectures and practical visits and workshops.
The group also took part in maritime visits to the ports of Barcelona and Genoa, helping them understand the workings of the different port terminals. The workshops organised throughout the course also clarified ship loading operations and demonstrated the organization and operations of a Ro-Pax vessel.
Between lectures, workshops and a case study which the students had to prepare in order to successfully pass the course, this complete and diverse programme gave the students a global overview of intermodal logistics operations. The on-board format of the course also helped the students visualize and experience actual short sea shipping operations along one of the main Motorways of the Sea of Europe between Spain and Italy. .
The success of the course could be felt among the participants and was summarized by one student in the following quote: “A good experience between professionals and the subject. The journey was wonderful. It was a pleasure to study in your school.
This month 2E3S will welcome another group from France – this time comprising professional representatives of the French transport sector. This MOST Operations course will take place between the 27th and the 29th of November, and is set to be a big success as well.
