From the 5th to the 9th of September the Escola Europea de Short Sea Shipping (2E3S.eu) organized a course called SURCO I (Simple Use of Railway COnnection). Specialized in intermodal logistics and rail-port services, this course was dedicated to professionals.
Through lectures and workshops, the participants could acquire specialised theoretical and practical knowledge which gave them the keys to build efficient supply chains that are including the railway network.
The contents of the course included intermodality, railway services of freight transport and maritime-railway logistics. One part of the course was focused on the maritime-railway situation in Spain (internal railway network of goods and its technical characteristics, the railway-port infrastructures, the railway terminal for goods, etc.). During the course, the participants had also the opportunity to to visit the infrastructures and experience operations firsthand: a visit to the traffic control centre of the Generalitat of Catalonia´s Railways (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya – FGC), visits to two loaders located in Martorell – Inovyn and Seat – and visits to terminals in the Port of Barcelona area (multimodal, containers, vehicles and bulks terminals).
This course was the first session of a complete training programme in intermodal railway logistics for professionals. The second session, SURCO II, will take place from the 16th to the 20th of January 2016 and will have a more international approach, presenting the European regulations on ground transport and the characteristics of international railway transport.
